This colorful Berlin bar and restaurant in the fancy Charlottenburg quarter will remind you of the Parisian cafes in Saint Germain – frequented by artists and writers and such as Hemingway, Sartre, Picasso and Fitzgerald during the gilded age – watch Woody Allen’s [Midnight in Paris] if you need a bit of a refresher – or the mid-century existentialistcafes where Audrey Hepburn goes seeking poetry slams and faux philosphers in the classic movie, Funny Face. We even saw three girls wearing black and white striped t-shirts, if that helps you set the scene in your minds.
The only difference is that Schwarzes Café opened in the 1970s and the tone was set by a new breed of artists, such as Iggy Pop and David Bowie. History has it that they kept an apartment in West Berlin and hung out and about Savignyplatz during this time.
There are moody exteriors both upstairs and downstairs; and there’s outdoor seating on the front sidewalk or in the graveled back garden.
We haven’t done lunch there yet, but we’ve sampled a kitchen sink-style omelet in the outdoor garden in the a.m. as well as ordered an after-dinner drink upstairs at night from the lengthy cocktail list
It’s a matter of personal taste, but this German spot for the cool crowd really settles into its groove upstairs at night, against the rich indigo color painted walls and faded gold gilded ceiling from which hangs a gorgeous disco ball.
Best of all, while Schwarzes Cafe is no longer is a 24/7 affair, it comes quite close, opening around 5 am and closing around 3 am.
