By correspondent Alice Lonfat-Chu
This year Yinka Shonibare's Refugee Astronaut VIII (2024) embraced the Venice Biennale's theme of "Foreigners Everywhere."
The life-size representation of a nomadic artist was a top piece from the Venice event, winning over a new legion of fans who came across it in the Arsenale.
The memory of the statue is still with me months later - so much so that the British-Nigerian creator is one of my most favorite artists of the year.
Next stop for Shonibare is Almaty, Kazakhsthan, where one of his towering sculptures will grace the entrance of The Almaty Museum of Arts, the first private modern and contemporary museum in Central Asia.
Called Wind Sculpture (TG) II, 2024, the commissioned piece will be part of the museum's summer 2025 opening and challenges viewer's notions of human migration, dominance and connection.
