The pictures you see online make this Japanese restaurant look warm with a wooden interior designed by Green River Projects, but Dr Clark in NYC's Chinatown is pleasantly dark.
This is a place you go to grab a booth (if you can) and order a well-made drink with your uni risotto (the best dish here) while the sounds of Roman Flugel, Tiga & Zyntherius and Love International float overhead.
While the city of Hokkaido is present in Dr Clark's menu, a punk spirit perfumes the air. And perhaps the spirit of Ghengis Kahn? As the Japanese-adopted version of Mongolian stir-fry is their main inspiration.
And even though the food might not be the standout, the service and the space lift this restaurant to a higher plane.
Go a little later, when it's not so busy, sit towards the back (in a booth or at the bar) and feel transported for an hour or two.
