In the Samurai district of Kakunodate is Kosendo, a lunchtime noodle restaurant housed in a historic building.
I was there in summer and tried the most amazing cold soba with sudachi. Like yuzu, sudachi is a summer fruit not found anywhere else.
The meal cost nine dollars. And not only were the noodles delicious but it was filled with antiquities of Shogun life.
TIP: I've heard that Kosendo is opened daily from 11 am to 3:30 pm, but closed on holidays. Best to check with the restaurant before visiting.
