Off Bleecker Street in New York City’s Greenwich Village is a public work of art for all to see - but somehow most of us miss it.
The 60-ton, 36-foot high statue is called “Bust of Sylvette.”
Designed by Pablo Picasso and built by his fabricator of choice, Carl Nesjar, this 1968 sandblasted concrete and basalt sculpture is a stirring sight to behold and, like its name implies, is a reimagining of Sylvette David, one of Picasso’s muses.
You can find the sculpture by accessing the courtyard at Bleecker and Wooster Streets.
Once there, you will see it standing in the shadows of the Silver Towers, New York University housing built by famed architect I.M. Pei.
So it’s really a two-for-one for art lovers - sculpture by Picasso and architecture by Pei.
For an overlooked public gem, you can't get much better than that.
