In the Munich university district of Maxvorstadt sits a cluster of three premier museums under the Pinakotheken (or “picture galleries”) banner.
The first gallery, the Alter Pinakothek,, was commissioned by King Ludwig I in 1826 and opened ten years later. It’s an impressive structure that features a renowned collection of 14th to 18th century “Old Master” works.
The second building, the Neue Pinakothek, houses an important array of 19th century pieces. Unfortunately, the museum – which covers the periods of “Goya to Manet” – is temporarily closed until 2029 due to renovations. However, some of its paintings and sculptures are sometimes shown at the Alter.
The remaining art center, Pinakothek der Moderne, displays creations from 1900 onwards..
Both the Alter and Moderne are popular attractions – especially on weekends and during Oktoberfest – but if art and museums are your thing, they’re very worthwhile.
