Percebes. Otherwise known as gooseneck barnacles.
Pound for pound, one of the most expensive shellfish on the planet.
These gorgeous barnacles knicknamed Lucifer's fingers are expensive because they like to grow underwater, especially in places that are hit by big waves.
Even Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay talks about the dangers of diving for percebes along the coast of Portugal, just below Galicia of Spain, on his show Uncharted.
Are they worth it? Once one of these sweet, briny little things squirt fresh seawater into your mouth, you will forget the price tag and keep asking for more.
You can't get better than the freshly harvested percebes in Galicia, the northwestern coast of Spain, right above Portugal. Anywhere else, I cannot guarantee the squirt.
Also try navajas (razor clams) and beberechos (little clams), lightly steamed, with garlic and parsley, just simply prepared Galician style.
