The Fairmont Copley Plaza is a classic.
Built in 1912, on the site of the old MFA museum, the Copley Plaza hotel has seen a host of luminaries - such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton - walk through its doors.
They would have no doubt walked through an opulent entryway called "Peacock Alley" and found themselves standing in a spectacular lobby complete with neoclassical columns, coffered ceilings and sparkling chandeliers, as well as an up close and personal art collection - keep reading!
We think you'll agree and like the history and the aesthetic details found throughout the hotel. Even the slight tiredness of the rooms add to the glamour.
What appealed to our inner aesthete?
* The numerous art prints on the ground floor signed by the likes of Calder, Chagall, Dali, Matisse and Picasso.
* The glass ceiling medallions (above the chandeliers in Peacock Alley) that resemble fish scales.
* A set of lobby clocks noting the time at Raffles in Singapore, the Fairmont in San Francisco and The Savoy in London. Truly, best in class.
* Heck, even our bathroom doorknob bore the same classic design as the ones we saw at the Plaza Hotel in New York (before it was renovated). After some digging, we discovered the same architect designed both hotels, hence the "double P" logo.
And, last but not least, we have to mention the hotel bar -- the OAK Long Bar + Kitchen -- is a stand-out in Boston. One of the best lobster rolls we have ever had was from there -- and it arrived on a silver platter via room service.
What can we say?
We're shouldn't be smitten by a hotel... but we are.
