There is no pastry shop better than Aux Merveilleux de Fred in all of North America. And we are blessed to have one in our neighbourhood in the West Village of NYC.
The croissants are light, flaky and buttery, all at the same time. The pain au chocolat has the perfect amount of dark chocolate smeared inside the same, deliciousness of puff pastry as the croissant. The pearl sugar brioche - called the cramique here - is a bite of heaven. And their namesake, little Merveilleuses, is a mouthful of crisp, light, sweet air.
Search no further for a cake, pastry, sandwich (using their brioche as buns around ham and cheese, smoked salmon, or crab salad) or meringue with whipped cream.
I tell you with confidence it is the best pastry you will find in North America. And I am obsessed with pastries.
Do I have any evidence? Well, for one, every time I go there, whether morning, day or evening, half the customers standing in line are French.
Tip: During Christmas holiday season they have a special cake that is off menu and for locals only. I call it the Noel Cake - ask for that and they'll understand. Order in advance.
