Bach Duet is another early Twyla Tharp piece – and a favorite for anyone that follows the Gibney Company. The 1974 work is intricate and layered. There’s incredible complexity in terms of movement. The incredibly synchronized duet is very fluid, very fast and flirty, very Twyla Tharp. The dancers move to Bach’s 78th cantata, “Jesu, der du meine Seele”, and the juxtaposition of Bach’s chamber music against contemporary movement and off-the-cuff choreography is very daring and delightful.
You can see Gibney Company perform this work in 2024 at Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur; the Chautauqua Institution; and Jacob’s Pillow.
