Breakfast could easily be my most favourite meal, and my Colombian girlfriend - who also introduced me to an excellent Colombian baker in Chelsea (NYC) - has given me all the best spots for coffee, ice cream, pastries and breakfast in Cartagena. Here we go:
Cartagena’s breakfast, snack, and coffee scene is a delightful mix of local flavors, cool treats, and relaxing spots to unwind. Whether you’re enjoying a traditional arepa de huevo, cooling off with a local sorbet, or sipping coffee in a historic courtyard, there’s always something delicious waiting for you in this vibrant city.
Breakfast and Snacks:
Mila Bakery and Café: If you’re looking for a casual spot for breakfast or a midday bite, Mila is the place to go. Known for its fantastic sandwiches and amazing desserts, it’s perfect for anything from an informal lunch to a quick snack. While I haven't yet tried their breakfast, it’s the one place I’d recommend to friends (aside from hotels). Located pinned below at Calle Ayos and Calle Iglesia.
Ice Cream and Popsicles into the Night:
Paradiso: This late-night ice cream shop is a must-visit for those with a sweet tooth. Paradiso offers a range of sorbets made from local fruits, with unique flavors like lulo, coconut lemonade, and corozo. They’re refreshing, and the best part is the lack of translations on the menu—giving you a true taste of Cartagena’s fruit offerings. Located at Calle Estrella and Calle Cuartel.
La Paletteria: If you’re craving something cool and refreshing, head to this popsicle shop at Calle Ayos near Santo Domingo Square. Open late, it’s perfect for an evening treat while you’re out exploring the city. It’s all about staying cool and enjoying the variety of delicious popsicles they offer.
Best Coffee:
Santa Clara Hotel: For the best coffee in Cartagena, head to the Santa Clara Hotel. Situated around a beautiful courtyard, it’s the perfect place to relax with a cup of coffee and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. It’s easily the most consistent and enjoyable spot for coffee in the city.
Argos Café: Another great option is Argos, located near Santo Domingo Square. It offers a peaceful space to sip coffee and enjoy the surroundings.
Juan Valdez Café: While you’ll find a Juan Valdez Café somewhere in the Old Town, it’s not as highly recommended. It’s fine if you’re looking for something quick, but it doesn’t compare to the charm and quality of the other options.
