You know when you are on the mode of shop-til-you-drop on Madison Avenue in NYC - or it could be the Meatpacking District downtown - and by the end of it you just want a simple cup of coffee, maybe even a burger or a greek salad? You haven't made a reservation anywhere and you can't walk any further. The idea of grabbing a taxi and fighting through traffic is daunting. And you look for that diner, the one that has always been, and will always be, right there. Well, in Madrid, this is Cafe Goya.
We stumbled upon this place carrying four large shopping bags after a day of going up and down Calle Lagasca in Salamanca, the luxury shopping district in Madrid.
Just one block away from the fashionable tapas and wine bar that you can't get in without advance reservation, we walked into this cute little spot with just a few bar stools and tables inside and some more tables strewn about on the sidewalk. There was a HUGE picture of their tortilla espanola - Spanish omelette with potatoes - on the wall. Obviously they thought they did this ubiquitous Spanish dish best there. And it was.
If you find yourself at the corner of Calle Lagasca and Calle Goya at the end of your shopping day, find this little cafe. Order a beer and their tortilla espanola, and rest your weary legs. You will be happy you remembered this spot.
