So my stylish NYC girlfriend originally from Colombia was headed back home on vacation and I asked her where she was planning to eat in Cartagena this time. And she gave me all her tried and true favourites! Here we go:
My repeat roster:
While I’m excited to explore new restaurants in Cartagena, I always find myself coming back to these favourites. Donjuan will forever be my go-to for a special meal, and La Cevicheria is perfect for a casual fix. La Vitrola, it’s one of those places you visit for the experience—because, while reservations are tough, the music and energy are worth it.
Cartagena has an ever-growing restaurant scene, but these spots remain my top picks, and I’ll continue to make repeat visits for years to come.
More to come later on the newer spots.
Restaurante Donjuan:
Without a doubt, Donjuan (location pinned below) is my top recommendation. This has been my favourite spot in Cartagena for years and is my go-to choice for special occasions, like celebrating my 30th birthday.
Donjuan has only two seatings and earned its place as a Cartagena favourite, having been around for a while and consistently delivering on both flavour and atmosphere.
The grouper with risotto is a must-try. If you’re looking for a place with delicious food and fun, Donjuan is hard to beat. I’ve already planned my next visit!
La Vitrola:
Right up there with Donjuan, La Vitrola is a fantastic option. The ambiance here is one of a kind, with a live Cuban band setting the tone.
Although La Vitrola serves lunch, I’d recommend reserving your spot for dinner. Plus, the cocktails here are excellent.
Getting a reservation can be tricky, but the effort is totally worth it. Whether you’re there for the music, the cocktails, or just the vibrant energy of the place, La Vitrola delivers on ambiance and atmosphere.
Juan del Mar:
If you’re a fan of Peruvian seafood, this small but standout restaurant located opposite Hotel Santa Clara should be on your radar. Known for its ceviches and other traditional dishes, Juan, the owner/chef, believes he is "one" with the ocean.
Open for lunch but great for nights, Juan will cook sing, and dance for you and flirt with pretty much everyone.
He also has a pizza place next door and the locals love it.
La Cevicheria:
For a casual lunch spot, La Cevicheria is a hole-in-the-wall total hidden gem. You can also go for an early dinner or a snack in between lunch and dinner.
Obviously a lot of ceviches that are really tasty and all great, and some Asian fusion dishes that sound odd on the menu but have always hit the spot.
Also right around the Hotel Santa Clara.
