In the Far West Village by Hudson River Park and the West Side Highway, Perry St is a New York City restaurant that old NY celebrities - think Calvin Klein - frequent like it's their own parlour room.
The kitchen is run by Cedric Vongeritchen, born in Bangkok when his father, Jean-Georges, was the Chef at the Oriental Hotel.
The decor is polished and restrained. The atmosphere is convivial. The food is refined but pungent with flavor. Everything embodies timelessness.
Highly recommended are fluke sashimi, the seared wild black bass in aromatic basil broth, and butter-poached lobster in lemongrass and makrut broth. It might be the only place where we recommend fried food. The crispy calamari is the perfect vessel for the yuzu dipping sauce, and the fried organic chicken with scotch bonnet sauce is also worth a try. While Cedric left Bangkok when he was two year old, he executes the intense flavours and textures from herbal vinaigrettes and vegetable broths to perfection, just like his dad.
But our guilty pleasure is what's shown on the photograph on the front of this card.
It's Perry St’s powerhouse dessert, a chocolate pudding sprinkled with violet candies. Creamy, simple, flavourful and delicately sweet, old-fashioned yet timeless. A simple, nostalgia-packed must.
