Back in ancient times, the Greeks were said to seek advice from a fortuneteller in Delphi and, instead of receiving lucid guidance, they would depart with a headscratcher of a response. So if you ask someone a question and can’t make heads or tails of what should have been an clear answer, you have received a Delphic reply. You could use the words ambiguous, obscure or abstruse instead. But then that wouldn’t be so Delphic… Or would it?
