Near Cafe Latrova is Doce Provisions. In this neighborhood you’ll see old timers playing dominoes outside and you can enter dance clubs roaring with live Cuban music (like one called Ball and Chain).
But Doce Provisions – an extra-chill spot with a tropical patio out back – serves exceptionally good Cuban food.
Here I order the ropa vieja (or “old clothes”), a shredded beef stew. I also love my roast pork. When I’m here, I forget that I’m actually pescatarian.
And you must have your maduros, the ripe, sweet, fried plantains. And then there’s tostones, the green unripe plantains that are cut into slices, smashed and fried until hard and crispy and served with salt.
And we can’t forget yuca fries, oh so good. Upon reflection, I realize there’s lots of starch in our cuisine… but everyone knows you need lots of starch for “old clothes.”
