When JFK visited West Berlin in 1962 he shouted emphatically to the German crowd “Ich bin ein Berliner.”
While all of us would agree that JFK meant “I am a Berliner” -- meaning I am (like you) a Berliner -- the story goes that he actually said, “I am a jelly doughnut.”
It’s sorta true – but Kennedy said exactly what he wanted to say and the crowd understood his meaning.
Still, we like the “I am a jelly doughnut” myth … especially since if you are what you eat, we, too, are jelly doughnuts.
And if you want a good doughnut, we suggest you make your way to Sammys.
We kept returning to this popular doughnut shop to thirstily eye their display case and order their sugary treats without restraint.
Over the course of three trips, we tried four types of Sammys’ doughnuts – the classic three ways, plain, filled with plum jelly or strawberry jelly, and the Raspberry Bomb. We enjoyed them all, but found the classic plain and the Raspberry Bomb to be perfect companions for our happy mouths and bellies.
One suggestion though, arrive here early. The simple fruit-filled varieties are Sammy’s biggest sellers and they sell out fast.
But even if you show up late, you can still find cinnamon rolls, crème-filled doughnuts and other creations to pair with coffee or tea.
You’ll thank us for this suggestion. Your waistline? That’s another story.
