Guadiana River divides Spain and Portugal, along the Northern border of Portugal, and finally flows into the Gulf of Cadiz, essentially the Atlantic. Where the river meets the sea, there sits El Molino.
A modest beachfront hotel with a restaurant, it is a hidden gem if there ever was one. Most vacationers flock to the larger Baiona Beach for a day out at the beach, but if you are a Spaniard in the know, you go to El Molino in La Guardia (or, A Guarda, in Galician).
Across the blue waters you are looking at Portugal. There is also a historic lighthouse. The hotel has a deep and wide verandah with al fresco dining serving everything from land to sea. The water is cold and refreshing, and its unique blend of fresh and seawater is rumoured to be therapeutic. At the end of a satisfying day with sun and sand, you will be seeing a magnificent sunset.
I saw a girl sitting on her hotel room terrace above with her legs crossed reading a book under a beautiful wide-brimmed hat. I admired her joy of peace and tranquility, and wished to try it next time.
It is a perfect summer beach day out. Plan to spend the whole afternoon there. Or a week's stay at the hotel, like the girl on the terrace.
