The elephants are on the move! They were in Newport, Rhode Island this summer and are in NYC (Meatpacking district) until October 24th. Their travels then continue with stops in Miami Beach, Blackfeet Nation in Montana, and LA.
They are rather lovely to visit. The Great Elephant Migration is public art at its absolute best. Life-size and available for purchase to raise funds for environmental conservation, these beautiful creations are all modeled after actual elephants in India. They were made by artists with the Coexistence Collective with specific animals in mind as inspiration for the sculptures--and what's particularly meaningful about their construction is that they are all made of lantana camara, an invasive weed which has been encroaching on their forest habitat. The idea here for us is to learn about sharing our planet, even urban spaces, with other species.
Go take a look if you have a chance--they're beautiful and they are excellent reminders about importance of conservation and coexistence with these amazing animals.
