This is an authentic Japanese restaurant. And what we mean is that there are EN's in Tokyo that we've been to. And Reika Alexander, Japanese-born restaurateur (and music major), joined the family business and assisted in the opening of the first EN in Japan, before moving to NYC to open this EN in the West Village in 2004.
You will learn from EN that Japanese food is not all about sushi and sashimi. It is the most delicate of delicate, warm, scooped tofu served with an umami dashi-ponzu sauce. It is fried rice with garlic, topped with shredded shiso leaves. It is salt grilled blue mackerel. It is multiple course kaiseki with sake pairing. And it is uni, uni, uni.
It is also an intimate music bar, inspired by Reika's grandfather's music bar in Tokyo, open during times when people didn't have TV or radios at home and sought out such spaces for musical entertainment. They hold vinyl sessions featuring vintage turntables and Westminster Royal High Fidelity speakers, and stay open until 2am Wed - Sat for true connoisseurs.
