We adore this Japanese grill and sake bar. We first were introduced to its NYC West Village outpost owned by the daughter of the family. Then as expats we were taken to the original location in Tokyo.
At one point there were multiple locations of EN around Tokyo run by the family, but now it seems this one is their mainstay.
While the fish is amazingly fresh, at places like this you pay attention to the dashi, Japanese broth prepared with a tremendous amount of TLC, the rice cooked in clay pots to a silky smooth texture, and scoops of home made tofu. Don’t go for standard sushi and rolls, but rather order everything you never see at a regular Japanese restaurant. Even for the raw fish, get creative with the raw fish prepared with dashi, ponzu sauce, or chazuke.
If in season, don’t miss out on the briny little mouthfuls of Japanese uni (sea urchin) on rice in a clay pot, also try the mentaiko ochazuke (spicy cod fish roe on congee-style rice) that should always be offered year-round.
