You are able to visit the Fukushima TEPCO site – the scene of 2011’s tragic nuclear accident – as part of an educational tour, where you are not able to take your phones in.
My friends and I thought it would be an adventurous thing to do and so we planned a visit.
It was highly organized by TEPCO and we booked through a tour group there.
The site is a couple of hours drive from Tokyo. We overnighted in Naemie, which was a 20 minute drive to the office (where we met) and were given a full overview.
We were not sure what would take place, but we all were very pleased at how structured and educational the tour was.
We went to the school that was hit hard by the tsunami and, with radiation monitors around our neck, stood 20 yards away from the reactor.
It’s a true learning experience and for danger seekers – who don’t mind some radiation – highly recommended.
The tours are for students but you may be able to learn more through a local guide.

An abandoned tsunami-ravaged school still stands.
But nothing is around.
