This is an elevated Japanese diner, serving nostalgic comfort food for the modern crowd. Like traditional omurice, the Japanese version of an omelette over tomato-y rice with a lot of ketchup slathered on top, or hamburg steak, a beef patty without the bun and a lot of accoutrement on the side. The hamburg steak, btw, was representative of what you would find at western restaurants in Seoul or Tokyo back in the day. This is a perfect place for a hangover brunch.
Another way to look at Hi-Collar is to think of it as an understated, casual cocktail lounge. While most people come to eat and drink, not just drink, Hi-Collar takes their cocktails seriously with block ice cut to the size and shape of the vessel, cut glass crystal tumblers for more serious cocktails with Japanese whiskey, and refreshing high balls with yuzu, the only way to dress a high ball in our opinion.
It may not be a place to travel for, but if you are in the East Village and are looking for nice ambiance and friendly service, this place will be a respite from the busy streets.
