It feels like La Goulue or Nello’s back in the old days of New York, but from what we read Borchardt tries to emulate La Coupole in Paris.
The high-end restaurant, serving French, Austrian and German delights has been a go-to for celebs, politicians and other notables since opening in 1992.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Madonna, Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel have all passed through the eatery’s doors and we wouldn’t be surprised if most of them hadn’t tried Borchardt’s most popular dish: schnitzel.
We tried it. And frankly while not as good as the schnitzel that Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner makes at Wallse in New York, we have to admit that Borchardt’s version of fried and breaded veal is large, tasty and served with a healthy portion of tangy potato salad underneath.
Even if you’re not curious about this cutlet, we think you should go and check out this institution -- if not for the food at least for a drink.
And if you do, try to speak German and dress sharply. If not, you’ll still be served but we suspect you’ll be placed away from the eyes of passersby and elite clientele.
