We love soba noodles, the Japanese version of buckwheat noodles. And when we were in Kyoto, we stood in line for a very long time to try a tray of the cold buckwheat noodles with dipping sauce.
While you can get soba hot in a soup broth or cold with dipping sauce, pros like us prefer it cold.
Our favourite is oroshi soba whereby the dipping sauce is served with grated daikon (almost like a mild wasabi grating), but if this visit is a once in a lifetime treat for you, go for the Hourai Soba (cold). Hourai Soba is a deluxe version of the simple dish, and you get not only the grated daikon, but a sampling of seven other toppings to taste.
The shop actually was a confectionary store before it was a noodle shop, but a 150 years ago the family created the soba mochi. Now the desserts and treats are as popular as the noodles, and since you can buy them up front without having to wait for a table, it perhaps can be a better use of your time.
Their website also generously shares the secret to cooking perfect soba noodles.
