One of Munich’s mottos is “Munich loves you.” Here are suggestions so you can love this historic city right back.
TIPPING / GRATUITIES
In Europe, there’s no expectation of tip. You can always round up and your server will appreciate it. For example, leave 130 on a 124 bill. If they hit you up for a gratuity - you’ve probably landed on a tourist trap. You can refuse and that’s fine.
TRANSPORTATION
If you are in Munich try to get your hotel as central as possible and walk. The city is very small (so you don’t have to walk endlessly) - but there is so much to see and soak in.
If you like to take public transport, get yourself a day card, which gives you unlimited access to the city’s buses, trams and subways.
PLACES TO AVOID
Like anywhere in the world, tourist traps and the city’s central station.
PARKING
Munich wasn’t built for your car. There are no modern parking lots, it’s impossible to find street parking, and there are so many one-way streets. If you need a car, park it at an underground lot a couple of subway stops away from the city center.
NEIGHBORHOODS TO ENJOY
For evenings and weekends, go to Werksviertel. During the day, stroll the University District.
CULTURAL SENSITIVITIES
Like any culture, there are things to avoid. People in Munich are super-sensitive about being photographed or videoed without permission – so best to leave your selfie stick at home. And due to history, don’t gesture with an outstretched right hand or wear a swastika symbol, even the Buddhist version.
