I went to see Postmodern Jukebox at a small venue last night. I wasn't sure quite what to expect, or whether those adorable videos would translate to a good live performance...so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the show.
Scott Bradlee founded this musical collective back in 2011 and they've been going strong every since, with a variety of artists participating over the years.
It was a remarkably fun experience--extremely talented and versatile musicians who seemed to be having a great time on stage, and an engaged audience all there for a party. It didn't occur to me to dress up, but if ever go again, I will. What better time to wear a flapper dress or a flamboyant gown?
Last night they started with "Pour Some Sugar on Me," the Def Leppard song, in a 1960s-era soul style. We also were treated with the Cure's "Lovesong" in 1940s-style jazz. Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," sounded suprisingly good with a horn line. U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" was pretty enjoyable with a gospel tinge. Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" got the 1970s fusion jazz treatment. You get the idea--close vocal harmonies like the Andrews Sisters, clarinet solos, a virtuostic tap dancer, and, throughout, a sincere love of popular song and music in all of its infinite varieties.
Check them out if you can. They're touring the US through early April, and will be found all over Europe through June, then back in the US in July and August.
