New York's Rowdy Rooster is an interesting Indian canteen serving quickly made sandwiches and other regional specialities.
It's known for its fried chicken, coated with Indian spice and your choice of heat. Served on a bun with pickled onion and a creamy green sauce, the taste tilts more earthy and bitter. That's easily remedied by sweetness - so ask for extra onions, mango lassi, or an Indian lime soda.
The saucy sandwich eats a little messy - so extra wet naps (supplied by the shop) are in order.
Rowdy Rooster -- which calls itself "unapologetically Indian" also serves other sandwiches (including chicken tikka) and a few sides (masala fries, rice and a chickpea, greens and corn salad).
If you like hot fried chicken or bold Indian spices, you may want to give it a go-around. Just remember to request something sweet.
