Hundreds of years old, the Ryoanji stone garden is a celebrated Zen temple centerpiece near Kyoto.
A space for meditation, it features 15 rocks placed over nearly 250 meters of white gravel.
The garden is part of the UNESCO-designated temple grounds, where visitors can enjoy other attractions, including Kyoyochi Pond.
TIP: Go early to avoid the crowds.
