This is an authentic Japanese izakaya sake bar with small plates of Japanese food. Do not think of your standard sushi or sashimi here. Even though sushi rolls are now offered on the menu - it used to be an absolutely travesty to even ask for such - it is the last thing that should draw your curiosity.
Go for anything with egg, tofu, grilled fish, baby octopus, spicy cod roe and pickled plum. There are so many variations using these precious ingredients. Be bold and try everything. Trust all will be delicious.
This place - hidden in the basement of a non descript office building - was once only known to Japanese businessmen that worked in and around midtown. At one point The NY Times blew their cover and the clientele as well as the food quality suffered a bit, but they are now back to their secret sauce and subtle clientele.
