Sant Ambroeus - which first started as a pasticceria and confetteria in Milan in 1936 and still stands today just minutes from Teatro alla Scala - arrived last year to East Hampton's Newtown Lane. And it is a fabulous place for breakfast or lunch.
Replacing a once glorious but tired cafe - I spotted Jimmy Fallon there once during off-season - Sant Ambroeus is just kinda perfect here. Perfectly cozy and manageable inside, a small bar to take a bit of overflow without creating rowdiness, a few tables with white tablecloth casually but specifically scattered about the sidewalk... with the same amazingly decadent yet light fare you can find in all their locations in New York City.
Go for brunch, breakfast or lunch. And get the smoked salmon platter and request an extra basket of bread. And always get French Toast for the table to share, even if it's just the two of you.
Service by the way is impeccable here. Not the typical Hamptons situation. If you wish, you can get your cocktail and eggs, and be in and out in 45 minutes to go to the beach.
