There's an old-school pizza restaurant that you have to try at least once if you're in the Hamptons.
It's called Sam's and it's been serving whole pies to sit-down customers since 1947.
The pizza is quite legendary - at least locally.
There's a secret dough recipe -- only known to a privileged few -- that's under lock and key. The sauce ingredients are classified, too.
No matter how Sam's makes their thin crust pies, they''re really good.
While a few people, even one Wonder Shuffle editor, don't like the pizza here ("too salty," "stinky cheese"), this writer think's it's one of the best pies he's ever tasted.
The dough when baked is crispy, hearty and addictive - more like a fresh, out-of-the-oven flatbread with hints of wine flavoring.
And the salted and oregano-flecked mozzarella and romano cheeses marry flawlessly with the sweet and tart red sauce.
We like our pizzas plain (to focus on the basics) but the toppings do take these dishes to greater heights.
One of our friend asks for his with jack cheese, garlic, spinach and pepperoni -- and while that may make you wince, it's quite savory and delicious.
Try Sam's once - and decide where you stand on this pizza.
For many in the Hamptons, like me, it's numero uno.
