More and more we've been reading about shark attacks.
We know that New Smyrna Beach in Florida has seen its fair share, with reportedly over 300 bites in the area since 1882 and at least three attacks in July 2023 alone.
But even taking this into account, hundreds of thousands of people swim there each year, taking basic precautions and safely exiting those waters.
Overall, sharks seem to get a bad rap (except the ones that feast on us) and the odds of an attack are so slim that you're more likely to be struck by lightning than to be chomped on by an apex predator.
If you're not convinced, there are common sense steps to make yourself less of a target.
And if you happen to find yourself face-to-face with an apex predator, you may be able to protect yourself with some quick-thinking options. And, no, punching a shark in the snout is not one of them.
Watch these videos below. Hopefully, they can put you at ease.
If not, there's always the pool. But then again, that hairy-chested guy over there could swim over and try to chat you up.
Ugh, we're never safe in the water.
