This place is lovely! I had the good fortune to spend a weekend here and when our cab from the airport pulled up, I half expected to see horse-drawn carriages and ladies in Regency gowns.
(The hotel is part of what was once a historic estate, built in 1750. But fortunately for us, it has modern amenities like electricity and indoor plumbing. And Wifi, which is always helpful...)
A bit south of the city center, it's a charming and beautiful spot, just across from University College Dublin, and a short train, bus, or cab ride away from all of Dublin's attractions in its busier neighborhoods.
The formal garden is lovely on a sunny day (it often rains in Dublin but the warm days, when you get them, are a delight). The restaurant downstairs serves a hearty traditional breakfast in the mornings and rather decent Italian food in the evenings, and the bar off the reception area is simply beautiful.
The staff here were extremely helpful and kind--they allowed us an early check in on short notice, gave us advice on tourist attractions and transportation options, and called us a cab for the airport return when I'd messed up my Uber reservation and threw myself at their mercy.
I'll definitely be back the next time I've an occasion to travel to Dublin. It's one of the friendlier cities I know, but the graciousness we encountered here was a stand out, even so.
