A friend was in NYC for a conference and suggested we meet up--so we, along with another friend, went to afternoon tea at the Whitby, which turned out to be an excellent idea, and an absolutely perfect place for conversation. There isn't much in the way of decisions to make--all you have to do is select your tea of choice (I went with English breakfast, they both with Earl Gray--there were numerous other options). I also added a glass of champagne to mark the occasion.
Crustless sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of pastries duly arrived, and we were free to catch up, enjoy the treats, and admire the utterly gorgeous setting, a oasis of calm in midtown Manhattan.
Our waiter was charming, attentive, took a nice photo for us, and refilled my champagne glass on the house. We lingered for a while, savoring the atmosphere and the company, and admiring the elegant china. It would be an ideal place to take a young girl for a special treat, or celebrate a birthday or promotion, or have a small bridal shower. Or just to get dressed up and make the delightful meal a celebration in and of itself. (I think I will need to go back in December and see their holiday decor.)
