By Michele Mariaud Gallery owner Albert Delamour:
I was looking for studio space and everything I found - from Chinatown to Brooklyn - was crazy expensive.
My neighbor who had a place in Bellport, NY, told me to visit.
Bellport, on the southern shore of Long Island, with Fire Island in the distance, is ocean-facing, but also feels like it’s also in the countryside - with farms, foliage and older wooden homes with American flags and white picket fences.
It’s a welcoming community that becomes cozy in winter and eventful in summer.
The village features a marina; a small, but sophisticated main street; and a genial atmosphere.
Bellport is also perfectly positioned - an hour-and-a-half drive from New York City; a hour-and-fifteen minute drive from East Hampton; and for non-residents a three-mile drive to the Fire Island ferries.
It’s no surprise that Bellport has become an artist’s community - from writers to painters to actors.
The village has called to celebs as Anna Wintour (who now lives in Mastic), Isabella Rossellini (who owns a cooperative farm on the Brookhaven border), and Charlie Rose.
Like most, I’m a fan of Montauk and Shelter Island - but you can think of Bellport as the “anti-Hamptons.”
There’s no flash and no need to show off.
There are old cars - like a cherry red Chevelle - but there’s been an eye-roll or two when a Cybertruck appeared during the summer.
Bellport is a place where a school crossing guard will walk adults across the street to “break the monotony.”
It’s a relaxed change of scenery where a strict 30 mile-per-hour speed limit is enforced; where a morning hello, friendly salutations and community spirit are the norm; and where you can find original shops, restaurants and galleries in a two-block radius.
My family and I liked it so much we decided to move here.
And when I saw a shopfront for rent, I jumped at the chance to reopen my wife’s gallery here.
Visit if you can. There is municipal and streetside parking. And once here I think you’ll find it a beautiful little place.
In the meantime, here are just some of my favorite places for you to enjoy.
* There are three art galleries that are very nice. They are very different and complementary to each other.
- The Storefront - a local artist showcase.
- MARQUEE PROJECTS - exciting and innovative art.
- The Something Machine - new art in a converted gas station garage.
* Mama Farm - a 28-acre farm and event space owned by actress Isabella Rossellini.
* Copper Beech - a luxury general store.
* The Bellport - for thoughtful home cooked dishes.
5. And, last but not least, my own gallery, Michele Mariaud.
