While there are older bars in New York (like Fraunces Tavern and McSorley's Old Ale House) Pete’s Tavern can legitimately call itself New York’ City's "oldest continuously operating restaurant and bar."
Stand inside the Gramercy Park meeting house and you’ll feel transported back to the 1864 with an original rosewood bar, ceiling and tiled floor.
Scratch beneath the surface even more and you’ll learn the tavern never shut - even during Prohibition.
And sense the gravitas from the second booth, the place where O. Henry wrote the most star-crossed gift-giving story of all time: “The Gift of the Maji.”
As for the dry martinis and their burgers, they complete the experience.
The martini - with the lightest touch of vermouth and a lemon twist - will halt you in your tracks.
And the traditional $24 chargrilled burger made with Pat LaFreida meat is simple, satisfying and filling.
For three dollars more, you can order a short-rib blended patty, but our restaurant source said to skip the option as it runs dry.
No matter the season, Pete's Tavern is magi-cal, but even more so during the holidays.
Stay and let the New York night envelope you.
Let the moment flow into dessert while your server constantly refills your coffee mug and the sweet slice of chocolate cake somehow disappears from your plate.
