Overall, the food in Iceland was really good, even in the smaller towns. I think there was only one meal where we were like, "Eh, that was just okay."
How’d we find restaurants? In Reykjavik, we did some prep ahead of time -- Googling places, checking Eater, that sort of thing.
But our last meal before heading to the airport was from this really famous hot dog stand called Baejarins Beztu Pylsur. It’s kind of like the Nathan’s of Iceland. They even have a stand at the airport, complete with branded swag—like sweatshirts and T-shirts.
I grabbed a couple of hot dogs there, and they were excellent. The style is similar to a classic Coney Island dog, with a nice snap to the skin. But what makes them unique is that the hot dogs are made in-house with a mix of beef, pork, and lamb. That little touch of lamb gives the flavor a nice twist.
The toppings are different too. The mustard isn’t your typical spicy brown—it’s apple-based, so it’s slightly sweet. I got one hot dog with just mustard as a control, and another "all the way," which came with chopped onions, crispy fried onions, the mustard, and a white sauce (not entirely sure what it was, but it worked).
They’ve been around for nearly 40 years, and it’s clear why they’re so popular. While there’s one original location, they’ve since added a couple of others. The one we visited, though, was the OG spot (Tryggvagata 1). Definitely worth the hype!
