Built under the reign of Augustus around 16 - 15 BCE, the Roman Theatre in Merida is a marvel, a place where you can still see performances to this day.
We watched a Spanish comedy there during Merida's annual classic theatre festival, and it was an extraordinary evening experience.
It was a feeling of connection -- with the past history of Rome, with the present applause of the Spanish audience and the timelessness of gathering in an open-air space for good entertainment.
If you're in Merida from July to August, we urge you to buy tickets to a performance here.
The theatre is billed as the world's "oldest functioning theatre," and we'll think you find (like us) that the venue is magical.
Also, stop by the nearby Augustus-built Temple of Diana, where they sometimes stage performances, as well.
