I've always loved the Strand Book Store. What's not to love? It's been around since 1927. It's a New York City institution. Its employees are knowledgeable about books, and what's better, they LOVE books. They have serious collections on scholarly topics as well as best-sellers and genre fiction, and they welcome tourists, locals, and NYU students alike. They'll even buy your used books if you need to make some room for your new books!

The thing I really love them for these days, though, is their display urging shoppers to have a blind date with a book.

You buy one of these beautifully wrapped mystery books (the clerk will kindly hide the name from you while checking out and will give you a folded receipt for the same reason) and it's a terrific gift for a friend--or for yourself. Because seriously: who could resist "The Shining with a Bunch of Band Kids" or "How to Get Away with Murder: Dark Academia Edition"? Or if something a little lighter seems more your speed, how about "Cute and Cozy Bookshop Romance"? See you in the stacks...
