From contributor NiccollsDP:
I think the best meal we had in Iceland, and definitely the most unique dining experience, was at Fridheimar.
It’s not far from Reykjavik, so it’s pretty popular. Definitely a good idea to make a reservation if you’re planning to eat there.
Fridheimar is a family-owned tomato farm, and everything they serve incorporates tomatoes. The tomatoes are grown in these big greenhouses.
Their tomato soup was honestly the best I’ve ever had. They’re also famous for their homemade bread.
We didn’t make a reservation, so when we got there, the main restaurant was full, but they have a bistro nearby that doesn’t require reservations. Honestly, I think the bistro was even nicer than the main restaurant -- it’s kind of like their event space, with a stage at one end and cozy seating areas with high-backed leather chairs.
It was quieter and cooler than the restaurant, which is actually inside one of the greenhouses, so it’s really loud, bright, and humid.
At the bistro, we had the tomato soup, bruschetta, and I tried to order a tomato beer, but they had some issues with it, so I skipped that. For dessert, we had tomato cheesecake. It was light and moussey, served in a little pot with a crumbly crust, and topped with tomato jam made from their own tomatoes. They even added edible flowers for decoration.
It wasn’t a huge meal -- just soup, bruschetta, and cheesecake -- but everything was so fresh and delicious. We both agreed it was probably the best food we had on the trip.
The place itself had a really charming, working farm vibe -- kind of like Blue Hill at Stone Barns in the U.S.
It was nice to be outside the city, and everything Fridheimar served was so fresh and made right there.
