As you know, we like to explore, but we also like to build equity and become regulars at a few good spots. Nothing feels better than when the maitre d' recognises your voice on the phone, and greets you by name as you walk in.
So when the legendary Palm was sold to a chain, we were honestly at a loss. Where do we go from here?
And then we were led to Il Buco al Mare. Inspired by their sister restaurant in Ibiza - one of our most favourite islands - you can sense the Mediterranean influence on the menu and their products.
The seafood tins from the Iberian Peninsula are popular, but we have our own source of supply and need not pay 10x. No need for you either, in fact, because everything else on the menu - most of which is made from locally sourced ingredients - are prepared and served to absolute perfection.
Get the ancient grain focaccia with just rosemary, salt and olive oil, which will transport you to Sicily, another island we adore. The other focaccia options with cheese and other toppings are tempting, but you're not here for pizza. Montauk oysters, local fluke and local tuna need no cooking, you just enjoy them off the boat. And then the heavenly bottarga shavings - better than truffles! The garden out back is also very pleasant to dine in.
This is how we found our next regular spot.
They also have a Cafe with Alimentari next door where you can pick up their focaccia, fresh out of the oven. Just remember to time it right as they sell out in the morning.
