When we were able to rather easily get a reservation at L’Olivo, a 2-Michelin star restaurant in Anacapri, just a short stroll from our hotel, we couldn’t resist even if we had already had a 1-star lunch. Why not? You are in Anacapri. Let’s just make it a 3-Michelin day!
Feeling a little bit gluttony inside and hoping nobody would catch on, we walked elegantly into the Capri Palace and entered the gorgeous L’Olivo restaurant. We get seated and lo and behold, who is the to greet us? None other than our table waitress from Il Riccio earlier that day! Oh boy did I ever feel like a tourist! So much for not being a glutton!
Thanks to my husband’s good American humor we were able to crack a few jokes and get over the embarrassment and dove into analyzing the menu. Knowing now that Il Riccio was also owned by the Capri Palace and also shared the same executive chef, I looked for different fare than what I selected earlier for lunch. Lemon-scented pasta, blue lobster, cuttlefish dumplings paired with peaches… all replicable at home. In all seriousness, this day gave me the experience to be able to discuss the apples to apples comparison of a 1-star vs a 2-star lunch. A unique experience. My verdict? 1-star is based on the supreme quality of choice ingredients and simple cooking, and while there might be a slight added layer of complexity to 2-star cooking, it is the ambience and atmosphere, presentation that gets you the second star.
