This place is worth a visit should you find yourself in New Haven. First of all, it's free and open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays. Secondly, it's the oldest college art museum in the USA...actually, in the entire western hemisphere. And thirdly, it's full of really interesting and impressive artwork. There's a lot to see here from various times and places, with a special emphasis on Italian Renaissance painting, African sculpture, and modern art.
I was particularly pleased to see Van Gogh's The Night Cafe and Joseph Stella's Brooklyn Bridge. And if you're there on a nice day, the sculpture garden in the courtyard is a delight.
I rather liked Alexander Calder's Gallows and Lollipops (despite its alarming title).
Another favorite of mine was Sylvia Plimack Mangold's January 1977. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get a good photograph of it. This one needs to be seen in person: the trompe l'oeil depictions of masking tape and rulers just don't translate well into another medium.
Go and see it, and bring some friends--then treat yourselves to some New Haven pizza!
